JACKSON POLLOCK - Number 1A, 1948
(three student opinions)
The previous episode of Virtual Gallery looked at Picasso’s Guernica - a painting that, at the time of the discussion, was completely unknown to the students who took part. It was interesting to hear their reaction to an important painting which they were seeing for the first time.
For this discussion a different approach was adopted. Three National Diploma (year 1) Graphic students, Chris, Luke and Charlotte, were invited to give their views. At the time they knew very little about Jackson Pollock and were not familiar with Number 1A, 1948. They were asked to research both artist and painting 2 days BEFORE taking part in the discussion. The aim was to learn what they thought as they began their research, and whether they changed their initial views as they learned more about the artist and his methods. It was also hoped that the interviewer (me) could take a less prominent role than was the case with Guernica, due to the students having come into the session with greater knowledge.
